Mistulang tumiklop si Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero sa matinding pressure na simulan na agad ang impeachment trial kay Vice President Sara Duterte.
“‘Yun ang gusto ko at ‘yun ang plano ko,” wika ni Escudero sa tanong kung puwede nang likhain ang Impeachment Court nitong Lunes imbes na sa Miyerkoles, Hunyo 11.
Paglilinaw naman ng Senate president, “Lahat ng bagay ay dadaan sa mosyon at plenary action.”
Umani ng batikos ang Senado dahil sa ginawang pagdidribol ng impeachment case ni VP Duterte na isinampa ng Kamara de Representantes noong Pebrero 4, 2025.
Aminado si Escudero na parang siya ngayon ang “nililitis ng publiko” dahil sa natenggang impeachment case ni Duterte. “That is the burden of leadership,” sabi ng Senate president.
Tinutulan naman ni Escudero ang posisyon ni Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino na ka¬yang tapusin ang impeachment trial sa loob ng 19 araw dahil hindi na ito maaaring tumawid sa 20th Congress.
“Ang posisyon ko tatawid ito (sa 20th Congress),” diin ni Escudero.
Naghain ng mosyon sina Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III at Sen. Risa Hontiveros sa pag-convene ng Impeachment Court, panunumpa ng mga senador bilang judge at iba pang hakbang patungkol sa impeachment trial. Gayunman habang sinusulat ang balitang ito nitong Lunes ng gabi, hindi pa napapagbotohan ang mosyon ng dalawang senador.
Samantala, tumanggi naman ang kampo ni VP Duterte na magkomento sa pag-convene ng Impeachment Court para litisin ang impeachment case laban sa bise presidente.
“We deem it proper to refrain from commentin¬g on matters that are exclusive and internal to the Senate. However, we reiterate our firm position that the initiation of the impeachment process—particularly the Fourth Impeachment Complaint—suffers from serious constitutional infirmities,” ayon sa kampo ni Duterte.
“The impeachment process must never be weaponized to harass, silence, or eliminate political opponents. It is a constitutional mechanism, not a political tool. Nevertheless, should the Senate choose to proceed, we stand ready to confront the charges and expose the baselessness of the accusations against the Vice President,” dagdag pa nila. (Dindo Matining)
